| This marker designates the western boundary of the City of London. There once was a stone gateway on Fleet Street there, designed by the great Christopher Marlowe in 1672. By 1878 it was too narrow and low for traffic. So it was moved out of the City of London, and then returned in 2004... | to Paternoster Square. The stone Temple Bar (gateway) that once stood on Fleet Street is the arched facade behind Syd. |

Syd sent me this picture. He wrote: "It is by Thomas Shotter Boys. His dates are 1803-1874, so I'm guessing it was painted about 1850. It is in the Guildhall in the City. It shows Temple Bar from The Strand. Fleet St. is the other side of the Bar, the Wig and Pen club on the right, and Twinings too perhaps, though I rather think it is just out of sight by our right shoulder as we look. You can see how the Bar obstructed the traffic". |

| The intrepid tourists turn onto The Mall, the long street leading to Buckingham Palace. | Gordy is far in the lead when we get near the palace. |

| We visited some of the places where the elegant people shop. This is the fabled Burlington Arcade on Picadilly. | Josh stands in the entrance. Behind him up-market fashionable little shops line the arcade. We walked up and down and window-shopped. |

By late afternoon we'd had a little shower and twilight came under gray skies. The famous Tower Bridge on the mighty Thames River says good-night as we leave London.
|
We left Bury St. Edmunds the day after London for a bus ride to Victoria Station and on to Cornwall, the southernmost county in England. |

| In Newquay the family met more friends of ours, Nikki Rochelle and Pauline Thorne. They used to own a B&B, but had sold it and moved into a large home in Quintrell Downs next to Newquay. It was so large they were able to put all of us up. | Every morning Nikki prepared a full English breakfast for all of us! She had the experience of years in the B&B business behind her. |

| Nikki and Pauline rented a people carrier so everyone could ride together. That was greatand great fun! | When we got back to Newquay after a day in St. Ives (next page), we took a walk out the Pentyre Peninsula. This walk is another one of my favorite places in Britain. I have lots of favorite places in Britain. |

| Crantock Beach spreads out to the north of Pentyre. | Cornwall's beaches and cliffs are some of Nature's best coastal work. |
